About the Fire Resistance in Plastics
Virtual Summit

Ahead of the Fire Resistance in Plastics Virtual Summit we are gathering a series of insights from our expert speakers. In this latest interview, we spoke to Adrian Beard, Chairman at PINFA.

Adrian will be presenting his paper titled 'Flame Retardants and the Circular Economy – how can we meet the challenge?'

23 - 25 February 2021

Please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?

Adrian: Head of Market Segments for the Flame Retardants Business Line at Clariant. For more than 10 years I have been in charge of promoting our cutting edge halogen-free phosphorus based flame retardants.

Beside this, I am chairman of the association for non-halogenated phosphorus, inorganic and nitrogen flame retardants (pinfa.org).

What are the current challenges you face in the industry?

Adrian: New challenges for flame retardants and material performance, e.g. in e-mobility and railway applications. Also, a tighter regulatory environment for chemicals in Europe which may put the local industry to a disadvantage versus producers elsewhere (Asia), with their flame retardants entering Europe in finished goods.

How do you see the flame-retardant industry developing in the next year and beyond?

Adrian: The trend towards halogen-free solutions will continue, because of the growing demand for sustainable solutions: flame retardants will have to prove that they pose no risk to people and the environment and they need to fit into the circular economy.

You will be speaking at the Fire Resistance in Plastics Virtual Summit, could you give us a little preview on what you will be talking about?

Adrian: I will be speaking about the sustainability challenges which flame retardants will face in the coming decade, with the Circular Economy being one of the most prominent.

What impact has COVID-19 had on the industry? How has it affected your company?

Adrian: Covid-19 had a major impact in the first phase of lockdowns in spring 2020, with even some end-user industries like automotive shutting down production. Since then there has been a steady recovery, and the second wave of lockdowns seem to have had less impact on the overall economy. For our company, Clariant as well as PINFA, we had to adopt to the new normal of working from home and not having personal meetings anymore. Although we did manage very well, everyone is looking forward to the “good old times”!

The 2020 edition of our long standing Fire Resistance in Plastics event will now take place as a Virtual Summit on 23 - 25 February 2021. Three days of online knowledge sharing and discussion that will bring together stakeholders from across the FR industry.

This event provides opportunities to learn from the experience of key players from all areas of the FR industry and to network with the whole FR community - all from the safety of your own home or office.
